Lumber company, flour mill, and water power utility located on the Spokane River; established by Simon Oppenheimer in 1894 with funding from Amsterdamsch Trustee's Kantoor; went into receivership in 1896 after unwise investments by Oppenheimer; reorganized with new management as Sawmill Phoenix. Letterpress book of outgoing correspondence (1895-1896) chiefly to Dutch investors; invoices (1 v., 1895) relating to work and supplies of the mill; and stock certificates (1 v., 1894-1895).

Simon Oppenheimer, a Spokane businessman, established and bonded the property of the old Spokane Mill Company and traveled to The Netherlands, where he sold the bonds to the Amsterdamsch Trustee’s Kantoor for $300,000. He returned to Spokane with the grand plan to rejuvenate the industries of the city, which were still in the doldrums after the Panic of 1893. Oppenheimer invested the $300,000 unwisely on various speculative schemes, and in 1896 the company went into receivership. Op...
